Wrong-Way Driving on HWY 18: A Growing Threat to Mountain Residents

Map by Craig Phillips

Highway 18 near the Crestline Bridge faces a frequent and hazardous issue: drivers mistakenly entering the wrong lane, creating a high risk of severe collisions.

This confusion often occurs as drivers pass under the bridge and stop where the middle divider starts, unsure which way to go. It's especially common for newcomers or in thick fog, like one near-miss just last week. The road narrows into two lanes with a guardrail, and that layout can mislead drivers into oncoming traffic.

The community wants action, proposing a longer barrier under the bridge to stop wrong-way entries. People say this could fix the frequent mistakes at this spot. The issue has gained attention, with calls for quick, affordable solutions like K-Rail barriers extending 200 feet east to keep cars on the right path before turns. Some find the road clear enough, but others see it as a clear danger needing urgent fixes.

Caltrans District 8 has responded, saying they'll address the problem. It's been sent to their traffic and surveillance teams for review. A February 14, 2025, report noted missing or damaged fencing on Highway 18 near San Bernardino, where cars get stuck or confused.

The fix? Extend the guardrail or add a K-Rail to block drivers from crossing the straight road section. The map above shows where the guardrail starts now and where it could continue, marking the confusion spot and ensuring room for emergency vehicles.

This community push shows a commitment to safer roads on Highway 18. With real stories, smart ideas, and official support, there's real hope for preventing future accidents on mountain roads we often use.
